The Challenge

The Northumberland Line project will reintroduce passenger rail services between Newcastle and Ashington and facilitate a two trains per hour service with 35-minute journey time.

The scope of the Framework Agree-ment to deliver the Stations & Structures Package includes pre-construction services, including early contractor involvement, and construction to deliver new structures crossing the railway at Palmersville Dairy and Chase Meadows (replacing existing foot crossings), road-overbridge at Newsham and foot/cycle bridge at Blyth Beb-side. Our contract was for two abutments for a road bridge and a footbridge spanning over the rail line, that re-mained live during our works.

This is part of the plan to move the A1061 to introduce more railway lines and a larger station.

The Solution

Our multifaceted solution to this project, combined 1No BG30 rig and 1No SR75 rig to install 72No overbridge abutment piles to 24m & 16No overbridge pier piles to 21m. 1No Hutte 204 rig to install 16No footbridge piles to 13m as well as 2No Liebherr LTR 1100 handling cranes.

Together these rigs installed 88No. rotary bored piles, 2No. 750mm Preliminary Test Piles (first visit) and 8No. 750 Sacrificial Anchor / Reaction Piles (first visit) and 16No.SFA 450mm Piles.

Despite the location, we were able to ensure reliable concrete supply. This enabled us to run the two larger rigs on site and complete the works within the 15 weeks target programme.
