BESIX Environment and Lux TP will modernise the electromechanical installations of the Mamer wastewater treatment plant in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. This upgrade will considerably improve the treatment capacity and efficiency of the plant thanks to modern technologies.
The contract also provides for the installation of a sewage sludge treatment and biogas production unit, enabling the plant to produce part of its electricity needs.
In addition to the electromechanical works, BESIX Environment and Lux TP are responsible for the coordination of the parties involved on the site, including the civil engineering works. In this context, they will develop a BIM model of the installations.
Since 2018, this is the sixth contract that the BESIX Group’s companies have won together in this field in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, making it one of the key players in the sector.
Current installations
BESIX Environment and Lux TP, in joint venture, will modernise the electromechanical installations of the Mamer wastewater treatment plant in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The contract, worth EUR 19 million, was awarded to them on July 9 by SIDERO, the inter-municipal water depollution company covering 26 municipalities and 80,000 inhabitants in the west of the country.
The modernisation consists of equipping the treatment plant with modern technology, increasing its capacity and improving its efficiency, both in terms of energy and treatment.
In the future, the plant will produce part of its own electricity consumption. To this end, the companies will install a sludge treatment process that will produce biogas. This biogas will then be used to provide heat and electricity. BESIX is carrying out similar projects elsewhere in the world, particularly in the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands, where the company has built two of the first energy-neutral wastewater treatment plants in the Benelux.
The treatment capacity will be increased to treat wastewater of 50 000 population equivalent, compared with 23 500 p.e. at present.
In addition to carrying out the electromechanical works, BESIX Environment and Lux TP are responsible for coordinating the parties involved on the site, in particular the coordination with the civil engineering works (Tralux), and the design office, Holinger.
BESIX Environment teams will produce a BIM model of the wastewater treatment plant, transforming the current plans into a dynamic 3D model. The BIM approach consists of creating a virtual model of a project before building it in the real world. This model will allow for optimal management of the station's modernisation, as well as its maintenance once the station is completed.
Project management has been assigned by SIDERO to the firm Drees & Sommer.
Throughout the modernisation work, the treatment plant will remain in operation, maintaining at all times its current performance, both in terms of quantity and quality of treated water.
This requirement generates an important and particularly precise phasing of the work. The project will start on 24 August 2020 and will last 4 years. The work will be carried out in 9 specific phases.
BESIX Environment and Lux TP have been present on the Luxembourg wastewater treatment plant market since 2018. They have established themselves among the main players in the sector, with contracts of growing importance.
In 2020, BESIX Environment and Lux TP are carrying out electromechanical works in six wastewater treatment plants in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, in Consdorf, Wiltz, Bous, Nachtsmandersheid, Putscheid-Weiler-Stolzenbourg and Mamer.
This presence on the Luxembourg wastewater treatment plant market results from the combination of the respective expertise of Lux TP, the Luxembourg subsidiary of BESIX Group, and BESIX Environment, a department of the group specialised in the environmental field, in particular the water and energy sectors.
It is also an example of the One-Stop-Shop solutions that BESIX Group offers its clients, i.e. the combination of various expertise available in-house to meet their needs.
