The LLC at Esch-Belval in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg won both the Jury and Public prizes at the 2019 Concours Acier awards. The Concours Acier is an annual awards ceremony organised by Infosteel, with support from EY (Ernst & Young). It rewards great construction and renovation in Belgium and Luxembourg which demonstrate the creative and innovative application of steel.
Mabilux is a subsidiary of Lux TP (BESIX Group), and was actively involved in the structural steelwork for this building, which is now operational as the official library for the University of Luxembourg.
The LLC was built on a former industrial site which had housed Luxembourg’s last working blast furnaces. The design is by Valentiny hvp architects, and integrates this industrial heritage magnificently into an innovative building which is both hyper-connected and environmentally responsible. It is surrounded and topped off by gardens, with a façade formed from steel and glass triangles.
The LLC building was opened on 24 September 2018 in the presence of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa. It contains 450,000 books stored over five levels, with a total area of 8,300m² in which reading and work spaces alternate with meeting rooms. The library is also open to the public.
Infosteel is active in Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, promoting high-quality use of steel in construction. As a non-profit body, Infosteel has the support of over 600 representatives from various steel industry sectors, in particular steelmaking, construction companies and design and architecture studios.
