Impressive infrastructure works at the Terminal Container of Athus

Socogetra, a regional affiliate of BESIX Group, has successfully finalised major works on the Terminal Container of Athus, in the south of Belgium. The infrastructure works are part of expansion plans to transform the terminal into an international hub for the transport of goods by rail.

The Terminal Container of Athus in the province of Luxembourg is known as the ‘dry port of Belgium’, providing rail freight transport to and from the North Sea between the Belgian heartland and neighbouring countries. To contribute to the European objectives of reducing polluting emissions and limiting road congestion, the terminal’s infrastructure is being expanded.

Socogetra, an essential Belgian player in road construction and civil engineering, is enlisted to perform the expansion works, along with Infrabel, IDELUX Développement and the Public Services of Wallonia.

Among the activities involved is pushing an impressive 3,000 tons tunnel under an extremely busy national road and constructing a roundabout, as well as renewing the viaduct’s surfacing. These works were recently successfully executed, not in the least thanks to value engineering proposed by the team of Socogetra. By suggesting a variant to the execution, the team was able to take advantage of the adapted traffic situation, with a beneficial impact on the construction time, traffic, quality and safety for the client, project team and road users.
