Final span in place at Kangaroo Point Bridge (Australia)

The Kangaroo Point Bridge project recently reached a major milestone with the final span being lifted into place and the pedestrian and cyclist bridge now reaching across the Brisbane River between Kangaroo Point and the City Botanic Gardens in the Central Business District.

The project is being delivered by BESIX Watpac-led Connect Brisbane Consortium for Brisbane City Council. The Kangaroo Point bridge is one of Australia’s longest single-mast, steel cable-stayed bridges.

The final 100-tonne, 25-metre span was expertly lifted into place, a process that involved sliding adjacent bridge sections across to accommodate the new piece. This engineered activity was executed seamlessly by the project team.

All structural steel bridge elements and cable stressing on this technically complex and unique piece of infrastructure are now complete.

BESIX Watpac CEO, Mark Baker: “A project of this scale and complexity exemplifies our ability to deliver exceptional world-class public infrastructure. We’ve brought the best-in-class together, combining both local and international expertise, which has enabled the sharing of knowledge. The project has created opportunities for learning and knowledge sharing for early career construction professionals and this is critical to ensuring the future of our industry. We’ve welcomed more than 56 apprentices and trainees at Kangaroo Point Bridge as well as 12 graduates and interns, providing them with the opportunity to build their experience on a world-class project.”

BESIX Watpac General Manager for Queensland, Northern Territory, and New Zealand Wade Cummins highlighted the planning and collaboration required to successfully deliver this project.

“Every aspect of the Kangaroo Point Bridge is complex. Our Queensland team has worked closely with our inhouse engineering team, partners, and subcontractors from the earliest stages of the project to ensure we achieve the best quality outcome,” Wade Cummins said. “Installing the final span and completing all structural steel bridge elements is a huge milestone for the team, made possible through collaboration and an unwavering focus on building the best project.”
