BESIX Group, through its Belgian subsidiary BESIX Infra, completed the acquisition of the road construction activities of STRABAG BV in the Netherlands on 29 January 2021. The acquisition includes a transfer of assets: all real estate (including the sites in Roermond), the asphalt plant, equipment, employees and ongoing projects are transferred to BESIX Infra Nederland BV.

BESIX Group, a Belgian construction company founded in 1909 by the Stulemeijer brothers of Breda (who also founded IGB - Internationale Gewapend Betonbouw), re-entered the Dutch market in 1992 under the name BESIX Nederland. Today, 29 years later, the company has an impressive track record of projects in civil engineering, utility construction and marine works. To name but a few references, BESIX Nederland has left a lasting mark on the skyline of Rotterdam with the towers Montevideo, New Orleans and Maastoren, it has participated in the construction of the ‘Roertunnels’ along the A73 at Roermond, and it has installed the new Limmel lock. The company draws on extensive expertise in infrastructure projects, such as the recently finished Outer Ring Parkstad Limburg, the ongoing A16 in Rotterdam for Rijkswaterstaat and the projects ‘Area development Eastern Langstraat (A59)’ for the Province of Noord-Brabant as well as the extension of the A15 at Arnhem (also for the Dutch Department of Public Works), for which BESIX is in the starting blocks.

BESIX Infra, a subsidiary of BESIX Group since 2017, is a leading player in the infrastructure market in Flanders and Brussels, as its sister company Socogetra is in Wallonia. With its strong expertise in road works and complex sewerage works, BESIX Infra has experienced successful growth in recent years. As 2 out of 3 of their asphalt production sites are close to the Dutch border, BESIX Infra was looking for opportunities to extend its activities to the south of the Netherlands.

Jean Polet, Chairman of the Board of Directors of BESIX Infra: “The acquisition of the activities of STRABAG by BESIX Infra Nederland is a logical step in BESIX Group’s strategy to set up its own road works activities in the south of the Netherlands, in addition to and as a reinforcement of BESIX Nederland’s existing activities.”

Bart Verhulst, Managing Director BESIX Infra: “Our goal is to be able to contract, accompany and execute road works as well as to produce and process our own asphalt, both independently and in integrated projects with partners.”

Kees van Eijk, Manager Infra bij BESIX Nederland: “BESIX Infra Nederland’s vision is to uphold the continuity, thereby continuing to work from the head office in Herten and the asphalt plant in Roermond with the existing staff and equipment.”

The activities of the highly qualitative and well-equipped asphalt laboratory (formerly known as TPA Nederland) will continue under the name ‘Infra Quality Support’.

The realization and expansion of BESIX Infra Nederland's business activities will be done in the coming years in collaboration with BESIX Nederland.

Mario Goossens will stay on as Director of the acquired activities in Roermond and Herten. He will be supported by Kees van Eijk in the realization of the strategic plan of BESIX Infra Nederland.
